"Learning the German language has hugely improved my relationships with my German colleagues, and not for the obvious reason! Whilst my colleagues appreciate the extra effort I’m making as I attempt to speak with them in their native tongue, which has made us laugh at times and has itself brought us close together, it has also changed the way I communicate with them in English too.

The biggest thing I’ve noticed is how differently native German speakers think, which is ultimately formed by their language. I’ve caught myself subconsciously forming sentences in English that are far closer to natural German sentence structure and use of tenses. The English is still technically correct, but formed in this way helps me get my message across more quickly and more clearly and ultimately makes it a more engaging and memorable conversation. This is particularly so when speaking with people who are less fluent in English.

"I have been taking German lessons with Birte for about 4 months now and am working towards getting my B1 certification in German. During the week, I was in a meeting with only native German speakers as part of a new projects. Although I was intimidated, I tried to introduce myself and discuss my thoughts in German. This was very well received by everyone on the team. I was told that my pronunciation was pretty good and everyone could understand what I was trying to convey. This immensely boosted my confidence as I could see the benefits of the course. I hope to carry on learning not only to pass my B1 but also to comfortably communicate with my team in German.
