The festive season is here! The twinkling lights, the scent of freshly baked Zimtsterne, and cosy evenings with Glühwein. December in Germany (or anywhere, really) is magical—but it’s also busy. With so much happening, language learning can feel like the last thing on your to-do list.
But here’s a thought: what if, instead of letting your German learning take a holiday, you made it part of your Christmas break traditions?
Just like lighting an Advent candle every Sunday or baking Christmas treats, dedicating even a little time to German each day can keep you on track and make your language journey feel festive.
Why Consistency is Key (Even During the Holidays)
Learning a language isn’t about doing a lot all at once—it’s about small, regular steps. Think of it like an Advent wreath. Lighting a candle once a week might seem small, but by the time the fourth candle is glowing, you’ve built something meaningful.
The same goes for German. A few minutes a day during December—whether it’s practising vocabulary, listening to a podcast, or chatting with a fellow member in our Hive—can make a big difference.

Make It Festive
Language learning doesn’t have to feel like a chore during the Christmas break. Here are a few ideas to keep it fun and festive:
Learn Christmas Vocabulary: Words like “Adventskranz,” “Weihnachtsmarkt,” and “Glühwein” are all essential words this month!
Bake and Learn: Follow a recipe for Zimtsterne or Lebkuchen in German. It’s a delicious way to learn! That’s why it’s one of our weekly challenges!
Celebrate with Music: Sing along to German Christmas carols like “Stille Nacht” or “O Tannenbaum.” There are great playlists on Spotify full of them, most even with lyrics! Watch out for the matching weekly challenge on this one 🙂
Chat with Fellow Members: Share your Christmas traditions in German with the Hive community.
Watch your favourite Christmas movie - but in German this year!
This Christmas, Let’s Stay Consistent
The end of the year is a time for reflection, but it’s also a time for building habits that will carry you into the new year. By dedicating just a little time to German each day, you’ll not only keep your skills sharp but also create a tradition that could become part of every Christmas break season.
And you can use your time to reflect on how far you have come already on your German learning journey, and plan your next steps for the new year. How far will you be able to go next year??
Join us in the Better German Community Hive and let’s make this December a month of growth, connection, and a little bit of Christmas magic.
Frohe Weihnachten und viel Spaß beim Deutschlernen!
